History

... it all began in 1890, when Joseph Opinel, an 18-year-old Savoyard invented his pocket knife in the family forge ...

1800

Blacksmiths from father to son

Victor-Amédée Opinel, who was a peddler, learnt how to forge nails during his travels around the country. He set up his first forge workshop in Gevoudaz, a hamlet in Albiez-le-Vieux, near Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne. His son Daniel later worked by his side and took over the workshop when his father died. He was to become a renowned edge-tool maker who was very much appreciated by the peasants who came to buy billhooks or sickles from him…

1897

Series no. 01 to no. 12

Joseph Opinel had the idea of making his knife into different sizes which would be suitable to different hand sizes or used for various tasks. So, in 1897, he developed 12 different sizes numbered from 01 to 12. The smallest knife, named No. 01, included a ring so that it could be attached to the chain of a pocket watch. Its manufacture as well as No. 11’s was stopped in 1935. Nowadays, the smallest Opinel, No. 02, has a 3.5-cm blade and the largest knife, No. 12, a 12-cm blade.

1901

The Pont de Gevoudaz factory

As the commercial success continued, Joseph needed to manufacture large quantities. He left his father’s blacksmith workshop and built his new factory at the Pont de Gevoudaz near the family workshop. In this new building, he streamlined production and developed machines which could manufacture handles at greater speed. With his hydraulic turbine, he was the first in his village to have electricity!

1909

The crowned hand

In 1565, King Charles IX of France ordered every master craftsman to place an emblem on the objects he made to certify their origin and quality. To follow this tradition, Joseph Opinel chose the crowned hand as his emblem in 1909. The blessed hand is that of Saint John the Baptist, taken from the coat of arms of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, the nearest town to Albiez-le-Vieux, the Opinel family’s birthplace.

1927

The new factory

Within a few months, a modern factory was built and inaugurated in 1927, the same day Maurice, Marcel’s first son, was baptised. Today, this factory is closed. In 2014, the “ferruginous” workshop, the last workshop of the Cognin factory still in active use, was moved to the Chambéry site.

1960

Joseph Opinel passed away

January 29th is a cursed day for the Opinel family. On that day in 1926, a fire destroyed the first factory in Cognin. On the same day, in 1960, Joseph Opinel died at the age of 88, having dedicated his entire life to his company. And thirty years after his father, Marcel Opinel died on January 29, 1990.
